Title of Innovation: Transforming Shrimp Farm Sludge into High-Value Agricultural Fertilizer
Innovation Topic: Sustainable Fisheries
Website: sinergiakuakultur.org
Awarded Amount: $35,224
Summary of Innovation
Yayasan Sinergi Akuakultur Indonesia is transforming shrimp farm sludge into high-value organic fertilizer, addressing both environmental challenges and creating economic opportunities. By converting waste into nutrient-rich fertilizers for crops like chili peppers, this initiative not only reduces water pollution but also empowers coastal communities, particularly women, in the production and sale of the fertilizer. The project fosters environmental stewardship and socio-economic development through pilot testing, the development of standard procedures, and community training. ABIC funding will support waste collection, fertilizer formulation, testing, crop trials, and training for sustainable practices.
In the next six months, the focus will be on successfully delivering the pilot project, which includes eco-fertilizer production and initial crop trials. Looking ahead to the next two years, the aim is to establish an institutional framework for eco-fertilizer production across farming clusters, integrating it into local and regional agricultural sectors with government support.
