Summary of Innovation

The Techo Sen Institute of Public Works and Transport is advancing sustainability in aquaculture with an innovative aquaponics system. This closed-loop system integrates fish farming and hydroponics, where fish waste is converted into nutrients for crops via a biofilter that turns harmful ammonia into nitrogen, which fertilizes vegetables. The system not only minimizes water usage in fish ponds but also produces valuable liquid fertilizer as a by-product. Currently in the laboratory phase, the project plans to expand to a pilot field version capable of supporting 4,000 fish in a 10x20 meter pond. Funding will be used for system design, site investigations, component procurement, community outreach, training, and system monitoring.

In the next six months, the project aims to launch its pilot system, engage local communities, and provide training to farmers and young entrepreneurs, promoting sustainable aquaponics practices. Over the next two years, the institute envisions scaling the system for broader use, enhancing its economic and environmental impact, and influencing sustainable aquaculture policies to foster long-term benefits.
