Poni Marine
BRUNEI DARUSSALAM WINNERS
Title of Innovation: Rumah Fish
Innovation Topic: Sustainable Fisheries
Website: ponimarine.com
Awarded Amount: $40,000
Summary of Innovation
Poni Marine’s Rumah Fish project focuses on deploying innovative artificial reefs (ARs) to tackle key challenges in marine conservation, such as enhancing fisheries and deterring illegal bottom trawling. By integrating advanced technologies like particle tracking modeling and artificial intelligence (AI) for trawl mark identification, and engaging local stakeholders, the project aims to optimize the placement and design of ARs. This cutting-edge approach is expected to reduce AR program costs by 30-50% while significantly enhancing the environmental and well-being of the coastal communities in Brunei Darussalam.
With the funding from ABIC, in the next six months, Poni Marine plans to deploy ARs with 30 modules, based on studies on fish populations and site selection. A scalable playbook will also be developed for local and regional expansion. Over the next two years, the project aims to establish itself as a regional leader, with more ARs (50 modules each) showing over 10 cm of coral growth and targeting a 50% increase in biodiversity, serving as sustainable fishing sites for small-scale fisheries.
